We drove to D.C. very early Friday morning and arrived shortly before lunchtime. My friend, Jessica, very graciously let us use her condo as a base while we were there for the day. First, we spent an hour or so at the National Zoo and saw the pandas, elephants and hippos, and a few other animals.
Other than the pandas, the girls especially liked the mother and baby gorillas.
We drove around the monuments and took brief stops at the Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum. We spent some time in the Wright Brothers exhibit at the Air and Space Museum, since Amanda studied them in school. The girls really liked the dinosaur bones and gem collection in the Natural History Museum. The girls were pretty worn out from the hot weather and walking, so we headed back to Jessica's before dinner.
Jessica drove with us to New Jersey the next morning. Our group of friends from college have had a tradition of assembling at New Year's every year, but now that many of us have families, that is harder to do. So this year was the start of a new tradition of gathering in the summer. We had folks come as far as Hawaii and Indonesia, and it was a wonderful time of reconnecting with old friends and meeting some of the new babies. Here is a picture of the older children.
Our family had tentatively planned to sleep in our tent in the backyard on Saturday night, but a sudden downpour turned the backyard into this water park -
It was a blast for the kids (and a few adults), but no camping for us. Some friends graciously made room for us in the house instead.
We got home very late last night, so I spent most of today catching up with laundry and things around the house. The girls, especially Amanda, are anxious to jump into summer activities, though! Both girls wrote and drew in their summer journals while we were traveling, and I let Amanda break out her summer workbook today, but we're going to kick off some of our other plans tomorrow. I'll post on our progress later in the week.
