A local quarry had a Community Appreciation event today, so we went out in the rain for free food and activities. The rain had pretty much stopped by the time we got there, so it wasn't bad. We toured the quarry in a small bus, and even got to go down to the bottom of the rock pit. It was pretty cool.
We learned about blowing up and manufacturing rock. We had lunch and got lots of little goodies (pet rocks, hats, coloring books, etc.) The quarry property is also a designated wildlife area, and they had a neat slide show of all the species of animals photographed by one of the employees. (There were probably more than 30 types of butterflies/moths alone.)
The Raptor Center also had a couple of people and birds there, and we got to watch them release a rehabilitated hawk back into the wild on the property.
The gold mine that is not too far away also had some people there, and Caitlyn and Amanda both panned for gold. And they both found a piece!
