We knew the person chosen as the Grand Marshal of the parade this year, though, and he had a friend of ours with him in the parade. It was a really nice parade and lasted over an hour. We got there early to get a good spot, and we happened to be right beside where a local HS marching band did pre-parade entertainment. We were in the shade until about halfway through the parade, but the weather was very pleasant, the best it's been over Labor Day weekend for as long as I can remember.
The girls really enjoyed the parade, and they got a whole bag full of candy! I wasn't expecting that, but we were right on the street, and almost everyone was passing out candy. The girls were also able to play with some of the clowns that were walking around, and Caitlyn got a t-shirt that was thrown into the crowd.
After the parade was over, we got some lunch and then drove a couple of hours to go apple picking. My favorite apple variety, Golden Delicious, are just coming into season, so I wanted to go now.
The apple picking was easy, and we got a whole bushel of apples at a pretty good price. Now I need to decide what to do with all of them!
We'll be talking about apples this week in preschool time, of course, and we will at least make applesauce and one pie, to get started. The girls had apple faces for snack today, and I have no doubt we'll have little trouble getting through all the apples before they start to go bad.
After apple picking, we went into a nearby town to do a letterbox. It was at a park on the edge of town and was pretty easy to get to.
The park happened to be where everyone was parking for the local apple festival, though, which we knew about but hadn't quite decided to go to. It was very easy to hop on a shuttle, though, and we went into town for some apple goodies and ice cream.
It was nice, but actually MUCH more crowded than at our own local festival, which we're looking forward to going to tomorrow!
