Meet Emma and Lilly

Caitlyn has been asking for a pet for a while now, and I really wanted to get her one. But she wanted a bunny, and I wasn't sure we could handle a bunny. I wasn't sure a bunny could handle our climate outside all year, and I really didn't think we had any room in our house for a rabbit hutch.
Well, Caty and I went on a rabbit rescue site over the weekend. We didn't see anything too interesting in our state, but I told her we could have alerts sent to us when something new was posted. Then, later, I decided to check out a neighboring state that might potentially have something within a couple hours drive.
And there they were.  They were already named, but the names couldn't have been more perfect for my girls.

The woman who posted them on the site is a college student who took them in after the family they were living with just couldn't let them out to get exercise because of their dogs. She gave us the bunnies, the two-story hutch, and all their food and supplies for free, so Chad and I were happy to drive about an hour and a half to pick them up. We did some re-arranging and made room for them, though we may decide to move them somewhere else later.

I wasn't sure we could handle bunnies in the house, but so far, we're really enjoying it. We still have some bunny-proofing to do, but as long as we keep an eye on them while they're out, I think it will be fine. Both bunnies are already litter box trained, so that makes it SO much easier.

The bunnies don't like to be picked up, but Chad brought in a ramp for Emma, so we can just open the door and she can walk up and down as she pleases. We can just open Lilly's door when she wants out, but we have to be careful, because Lilly is a little protective of her space and was not pleased when Emma decided to walk and in and make herself at home. Lilly thought Emma's ramp was also great fun, so we kept Emma away while Lilly tried it out.
Emma is much more adventurous and bold than Lilly, and we'll have to be very careful if we take her to play outside. She seems to have all those natural bunny instincts. Lilly is much more calm by nature. She does like to chew, though. We have to keep an eye on papers, boxes, and books while she's out. I went today to get her some chew sticks, so hopefully that will help. This weekend, the girls are hoping to build them a rabbit castle out of boxes so they can have something of their own in which to play.
